About me
Tiya Shaw is a highly accomplished educator, holding a graduate degree from Fisk University and endorsements in K-12 Administration. With 23years of teaching experience under her belt, Tiya has demonstrated a deep commitment to providing quality education to her students. She has made significant contributions to the field through her work as a developer and manager of engaging digital content for the Virginia Geographic Alliance (VGA). Tiya's integration of the online Atlas of Virginia into her curriculum has helped students explore the world around them interactively and dynamically. Additionally, Tiya's dedication extends beyond her classroom as she sat on the board of the Shenandoah Valley Writing Project (2023-2024), where she served as a teacher consultant, sharing her expertise with other educators. She has also facilitated classes for high school teachers in the IB program, focusing on strategies for writing across different content areas.As the creator of GeoLit Labs and the production manager of VA GeoExplorers, Tiya Shaw continues to make a profound impact on education. Her innovative approach to teaching has garnered recognition, and she was honored as a 2023 K-12 Humanities Fellow and recipient of the VGA GeoAmazon scholarship. As the K-12 History and Social Sciences Coordinator for Spotsylvania County Public Schools, Tiya collaborates with division teachers and administrators to develop engaging and standards-aligned lessons that foster exploration and critical thinking. Tiya is also the 2023 NCSS (National Council of Social Studies) Grant recipient for the Enhancement of Geographic Literacy in Honor of James F. Marran sponsored by GENIP. She is the creator and facilitator of History on Wheels, an enrichment program that provides students from various backgrounds with an opportunity to explore historical sites during the school year and the summer. She is passionate about forging community partnerships that strengthen relationships with families, as well as building a history and social science program that instills a love for learning in students that will last a lifetime. Tiya currently serves as president-elect for the Virginia Social Studies Leaders Consortium.
